At UK Driving Tuition (UKDT), our pupils receive complimentary access to Theory Test Pro, the leading online resource for learner drivers. Our instructors provide guidance on how to effectively utilise this software, helping you to pass your theory test on your first attempt.
Given that driving test waiting times have recently extended to three or four months, we recommend that theory test candidates prepare for and take their theory test soon after beginning their driving lessons. This approach allows you to apply for your practical driving test as soon as you pass the theory test.
Remember, you must pass the theory test before you can book your practical driving test. The theory test comprises two parts: a multiple-choice question section and a hazard perception test, and it typically takes around one hour to complete.
To pass the multiple-choice question test, you must achieve a minimum score of 43 out of 50. Each question typically presents four possible answers, with one correct option.
For the hazard perception element, a score of 44 out of 75 is required. This section includes fourteen film clips, each lasting approximately one minute. Each clip features at least one moving hazard that you need to respond to. The quicker you react to the developing hazard, the higher your score for that clip, with a maximum of five points available for each of the fifteen hazards. Please note that all film clips are now presented as computer-generated imagery.
It’s important to remember that you must pass both parts of the test on the same day. You will receive your results shortly after completing the test.
You can book your theory test from this page.
You must have a provisional driving licence to book your theory test.
There are 2 parts to the test:
You book and take them as a single test. You must pass both parts to pass the test.
You can take the theory test from your 17th birthday onwards.
You can take it from your 16th birthday if you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
You usually need to take the theory test before you can get your full car driving licence.
You don’t need to take the car theory test if you:
You must pass a car theory test before taking the car driving test.
Find out if you can drive in Great Britain (GB) with your non-GB licence without taking a theory and driving test.
You can change the date of your theory test after you’ve booked it.
You can check your appointment details if you’ve lost your booking confirmation.
Rebook your theory test if you failed your test and want to resit it. You must choose a date at least 3 working days away.
